Extremity Doppler Ultrasound
Extremity Doppler ultrasound is a safe, painless, and non-invasive imaging test used to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins of the arms and legs. Using high-frequency sound waves, this examination helps doctors assess how well blood is circulating and whether there are any blockages or circulation problems.
The procedure does not involve radiation or contrast material and provides valuable information to help your doctor better understand the cause of your symptoms and guide the most appropriate treatment plan.
Why Is an Extremity Doppler Ultrasound Performed?
A Doppler ultrasound may be recommended when there are signs or symptoms of reduced blood flow in the arms or legs. Decreased circulation can be caused by blood clots, narrowed or blocked arteries, or problems with venous valves.
This examination is commonly used to evaluate the following conditions:
Venous Doppler Ultrasound
Venous Doppler ultrasound focuses on the veins and is used to assess venous obstruction and venous insufficiency.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Sudden leg swelling, pain, warmth, or tenderness may indicate a blood clot in a deep vein. - Varicose Veins and Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Leg heaviness, swelling, visible varicose veins, skin discoloration, or venous ulcers.
Venous Doppler ultrasound is essential before any varicose vein treatment to evaluate both the deep and superficial venous systems. - Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Painful inflammation of superficial veins just beneath the skin, assessed to rule out extension into the deep venous system.
Arterial Doppler Ultrasound
Arterial Doppler ultrasound evaluates arterial blood flow and helps detect narrowing or blockage of arteries.
- Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
Leg pain during walking (claudication), coldness of the feet, color changes, weak pulses, or non-healing wounds. - Acute or Chronic Limb Ischemia
Sudden or progressive reduction in blood flow that may affect tissue health if left untreated. - Follow-up of Known Arterial Disease
Monitoring blood flow after vascular procedures such as stent placement or bypass surgery.
What Does a Doppler Ultrasound Show?
An extremity Doppler ultrasound provides detailed information about:
- The presence or absence of blood clots
- The degree of arterial narrowing or blockage
- Venous reflux and valve dysfunction
- Blood flow direction and velocity
- Overall vascular circulation in the limbs
How Should I Prepare?
In most cases, no special preparation is required.
Wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined is usually sufficient.
